American Sign Language (ASL)

The County has Blanket Purchase Orders (BPOs) with two companies that provide ASL interpreters who can assist with translation for the hearing impaired in meetings. Please note that given the length and/or complexity of the meeting, more than one interpreter may be required.

Telephone Services for the Deaf or Hearing Impaired

711 California Relay Service

The State of California makes communicating by telephone easy with the 711 California Relay Service. It’s as simple as dialing 711 to be connected with an operator who will facilitate your communication.

TTY/TDD Instructions

  1. TTY Phone should be set at Auto Answer on.
    • When it rings, it automatically answers with a message stating our location.
    • There is no need to pick up the receiver.
  2. The caller will type in a response to our message ending with "GA" (go ahead). Return.
  3. We type in a response to any questions or requests they have.
  4. Any call can be ended with "SK" (stop keying).
  5. Hang up = Shift + TTY On/Off.
  6. Make sure the TTY phone is reset to automatically answer.

TTY Devices

MCI also offers National Telerelay Services, with communications assistants acting as a link between text telephone users and standard telephone users for calls outside California.

  • Text (TTY) users may call 1 (800) 668-4TTY or 1 (800) 668-4889
  • Standard users who wish to contact TTY users should call 1 (800) 947-VOICE or 1 (800) 947-8642

There is no extra charge for this service.

Additional Resources

The Human Resources Department has contracts with several community resource agencies that specialize in serving individuals with disabilities. If your public accommodation need is complex, consult with your Department ADA liaison, as these local agencies may be able to help advise the Department on providing accommodation. Human Resources has contracts with Becoming Independent, Disability Services and Legal Center, and the Earl Baum Center.

  • Job Accommodation Network is a service provided by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and facilitates the employment and retention of workers with disabilities by providing information on job accommodations. Job Accommodation Network can assist with identifying solutions to accessibility issues for a wide range of impairments.
